Producer Brian Couzens. Engineer Ralph Couzens. Engineer The 25 year old Mozart composed Idomeneo as perhaps the last great opera seria. Amongst it's many glories is his wonderful use of the orchestra and chorus (and it was for these reasons - amongst others - that we chose it). The immensity of the music and the themes have produced a work like no other, and one that is not well understood.

It is composed in the baroque tradition of the opera seria; however, Mozart excels at giving it new traits and forms. Mozart’s most famous operas are written in the comic or semi-comic genres known as opera buffa, dramma giocoso, and Singspiel, and were composed in the last five years of his life. But the great genius also created “serious” operas, or opere serie ( opera seria , in the singular) as the highly formal, stylized genre is known—the chief examples being his Idomeneo (1781) and La Clemenza di Tito (1791). The libretto was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text by Antoine Danchet, which had been set to music by André Campra as In opera: Viennese masters. This was Idomeneo (1781; libretto by Giambattista Varesco in imitation of Metastasio).
